Fuel heater

Postby PRINCETON_JAKE » Sun Jan 17, 2010 8:34 pm

As soon as the new piston pump shows up im going to put it on and a new fuel filter. How much if any would i benifit from "deleting" the fuel heater? Also i was told to check/clean the fuel heater "screen". How do I do that? Any pictures or diagrams would be awsome.

you dont have a fuel filter screen unless you have a p pump fuel filter set up. they have a big assembly that bolts behind the lift pump liek a spacer. thats why you need the spacer to mount the lift pump to your block, for proper cam lobe clearance.

I read in the archives that there is a heater above the fuel filter. :? Is there a screen above the filter?

I would like to know about deleting the fuel heater too.Anyone ever do it?Would a new threaded bushing be required to screw the filter on? I think mine is cracked, has a slow drip,so I'd like to ditch it.

yes there is a heater above the fuel filter. but there is no screen. im am thinking that you heard about the screen that is the prefilter for the p pump application. im not sure how you go about deleting the fuel heater.

If you live in a cold climate, I'd leave it in and make sure it works. Thick fuel+thin filter=slow fuel. Ask me how I know.

I run a fuel cooler. Haven't had the heater for going on three years now. Drove in sub zero temps numerous times, no problem.

I run fuel adds like 2-stroke and Howes in the winter I also have 2 different Racor water separator/filters (primary 14 or 30um and secondary 2um) in my fuel lines so gelling and frozen water will not be an issue.

The fuel starts getting harder to pump at about -15, but as long as there's no water or gelling it's not an issue.

Same here, no fuel heat or grid heat yet this winter. I guess I'll pull it apart and see what I can do!

Lots of guys pull the fuel heaters and throw them away. Even in Alaska. ;) They have a tendency to leak thru the plug hole. Don't ask how I know.
And yes, you need to take out the threaded stud and install a short one. It has an allen head inside, 8mm or 5/16.

I dont need the heater, will it flow better if I remove it? What exactly do I need to do?

I had my fuel heater off today and noticed that there is a ridge on the filter casting that goes in the groove on the fuel heater. So finding a filter to seal on or in/out of the ridge would be tricky.Anyone have a filter # who has done this mod? Bushing size?I fixed fuel heater leak and FS1221 will be in tmo morning.Drilled out the banjo bolts to 3/16 also, improved throttle response slightly.
