I have a front end shake that is the same regardless of tire age. I can't find it. My steering is fine, tired are wearing pretty evenly. This is with the hubs unlocked or locked. I can have the tires rotated and rebalanced and it is exactly the same. Running American Racing wheels. Making me crazy.

I had my kingpins apart a while back and they were more worn than I would have expected. I did the sensible "try to shake the hub up and down on the truck" to see if they were worn but no dice because they are quite tight....regarless I rebuilt them and my left front stopped shaking ...might be worth a look

I know I need a piece of 3/4" hex to unscrew the king pins, but what other tools do I need?

I never even pulled the kinpins themselves, i believe they are tourqued to like 150ftlbsn

other than that big hex there are no special tools

what was worn on mine was the plastic collar piece, I got a rebuild kit from napa for pretty cheep

I started my truck and twisted the borgesson while looking at the front end. The tie rod link on the drivers side had at least 1/8" of slop, and the other side and drag link ball joints were also shot. I replaced all of them and got rid of the shake, but I still have the shimmy at speed. I just ordered a complete kingping rebuild kit and the 3/4" hex wrench to get the uppers out. I can tell my king pins are shot because it is wearing the inside on the tires a bit. Have a feeling I will have to put a 6' cheater on the hex wrench to get the things loose.... steering is really tight now.

yeah that was the same as mine, aligned it 4 times to make sure I wasnt crazy and it was still wearing the insides of the tires

Take a cut-off wheel and cut around the base of the kingpin, but leave enough to not snap it off while turning it (Try .250" or so) . Makes childs play of removing those stubborn b*stards.
