Turbo Upgrade

Postby nolafishr » Thu Jan 19, 2012 2:48 pm

I was reading where you can install a Turbo from a 04-07 model on to a 1st gen 12 valve engine. I was thinking of upgrading my turbo housing but after reading this it got me thinking, I have a turbo, intercooler/tubing and boots from a 2006 model and they are still like new with only about 12000 miles on the truck when removed. Can I install this on my 93 model? What would have to be modified to do this? Any info would be appreciated.

i may be wrong but the turbo should bolt to the manifold you will have to move the exhaust back and fit the intercooler in, and get a third gen air horn..i think

I did not think it would take too much to make this work, I also have the air horn from the other truck. I will wait and see what others will have to say on this. The Intercooler and Tubes should all be 3"so that will help improve air flow.

If I remember correctly, you need to remove a pin to clock the compressor housing correctly. Beyhond that, the 3rd Gen cooler is huge! You need to cut the frame rails to get it to fit.

I just installed a turbo from an 06 (he351cw), powerstroke intercooler, and coolertubz IC piping.

3rd gen IC will not work, too much hassle, turbo works fine with some minor adjustments/fabbing.

IC piping:

Thanks for the info, I was not sure how things would fit, I remember reading about it. I tried the link on the Turbo swap but it wwas wrong, is there another one on here that shows you how to do this. I will have to check into the Intercooler also.

Link for turbo swap is right, i just have alot of other upgrades going on aswell. If you read from that page on you will see the start and end of the turbo install, among the other installs i am doing.

Can someone give me more info on clocking the turbo, I understand it is rotating the housing, it is just that I have never done it before. I have changed out a turbo and manifold before.

It can be as easy as loosening up the clamp that goes around the housings, and rotating them to your liking, but since there are locating pins holding them in, take one side off completeley, remove the pin, and put it back together. Then do the other side. Not too terribly difficult, I did the same when I had my HE351ve apart ;)

Take the pins out before mounting the turbo! The compressor housing has a large snap ring which is a bugger to install/remove while mountied on the truck. There are pins betweeen the comp. housing and centre body as well as the centre body and exh. housing. Both sides need to be removed so the centre body can be rotated to allow the oil inlet/outlet to be vertical.

One other thing is the manifold studs need to be backed out to be long enough so the nuts have enough thread to grab. The top two studs on the turbo housing need to be removed and the holes opened up so the existing manifold studs can be used.

Seems complicated but its not once you have it and can test mount it.

I have a question about the oil line being vertical, on the 93 model it is located on the top of the turbo and on the 06 model turbo it is located on the bottom of the turbo for better draining to return to the engine. Does it matter where it is located? It seems that it is better on the bottom for better draining to return to the engine. I wanted to ask this because I noticed this.

See my above post about removing pins. You need to pull them so you can move the body to make the oil ports vertical like the stock turbo is. Feed is in the top and drains out the bottom, vertical is best.
