92 wont turn over ,keeps blowing fuse..

Postby powerage » Sun Jan 29, 2012 7:57 am

Lots of info here on this forum I just need a little more help! After poking around aimlessly for awhile I found a broken wire inside the sheathing where it comes out of the Y connectore to all the fusible links it was the orange wire and it had a white wire tied into it.On the other side of the link it s a solid red wire that feeds into the junction on the firewall. So to confirm if this was the cause of the no start I cut the wire back and touched it back together, and the truck turned over, so I reconected the wire ,tried again and the link went up in smoke,I then went to the parts store and got an inline fuse holder and a 40 amp fuse, blew the fuse.Every time I turn the key it blows the darn fuse.I know there is a dead short someplace just would like some guidance where to start looking? I have had the truck for about 5 yrs, and there is evidence of an underhood fire sometime in its past before I got it, other than the headlight switch and the cruise not working anymore it has been a good ol truck..but the past fire evidence makes me think it could be anything... What I dont get is that I got it to start cranking, and now it just kills the fuse...any ideas or help greatly appreciated! Oh yeah its a 2wd automatic trans.

Just to clarify, does it pop the fuse when you turn the key on or when you turn the key to start?

Before you do anything else unplug/unbolt the starter solenoid wire. It could be shorted.
Or the starter relay could be as well.

That would be the smaller wire that runs down to the starter correct? Is the starter relay one of the three by the hood hinge on the inner left fender? Thanks !
