top turbo shootout

Postby fatstack » Tue Feb 07, 2012 7:30 pm

Please help me choose the best turbo to put up with with stock non ic sticks, and later down the road with 6 x 16 sticks over an s400 in twins. A) s300g b) he351 c) hx40 d) 60mm hybrid hx35 e) other. Thanks

If it were me, I would probably lean towards the S300, since plenty of fellows on here are running S300/S400 compounds on here and you are going to go that route eventually. bgilbert ran that on his 550hp truck as a top unit, although I am not sure on the specific size of it.

Whatever's cheap. If you are going with big sticks and twins in the future, spend your money on that.

What is the overall hp goal? What size S400? There is science behind this people, not picking the flavor of the month.

Jon is right, most of those turbos would require a decently small s400 to do well in a set of twins. there truly is no single turbo to rule them all.

I would suggest a s363/68/.91 twinscroll

might be a bit big for non Ic sticks, but it would pair up well with a s400 down the road with an external gate or two

A 63 in our boats would be good for mid range and top end but be laggy on the bottom with out at least a cam.

If it is an all around truck, a he351 or s300g 57mm with a 472 would be good. Enough air for top end, not a lot of low but better than a 63.

That is, if you want a pick from your list.

S300G over S471 or S475 are a nice setup for relatively cheap.

I would go with the he351cw. there are a few guys making 700hp when coupled with something like an ht4c. I have seen a few commonrail trucks around here do righ at 500whp with an he351cw with modded waste gates.

Thats definitely a little ways down the road tho.just stock sticks and single turbo for now. Mainly want a happy medium between spool up and egt control in both setups.

Small turbine on your s400 primary will be beneficial.

I'd go with the he351, because it is cheap. I have ran an hx35 as a secondary and thought it performed well also.

And there is a .83 housing for the 63/68 turbo that has not been mentioned.

No truer words have been spoken. This goes for any other performance part as well. They all have to support one another in order to perform correctly. A street racer and a tow pig have different requirements, so you have to set a specific goal and part toward that goal and forget the rest.
I have a pile of parts to prove it.

So I have in hand an he351cw :D. Should i b able to stay on top of it ( in the power) with my stock injectors?

HE351CW has a waistgated 9cm2 turbine housing. Even with an intercooler I'd be worried about the EGT.
