Mystery pump bolt

Postby m880cummins » Mon Mar 05, 2012 8:20 pm

Hi,

Can someone tell me what this bolt is next to the mounting nut? (scroll down page) Mine is loose and does not have that tab.

That's the bolt you tighten up if you want to lock the pump for removal.

Yup, you loosen it and pull that plate out. That lets you thread the nut in even farther than usual, though if you don't have the pump at #1 I'm not sure it'll even thread in...

SH**!!!!

The plate is missing from mine and it is in the locked position. My engine rattles pretty bad under load...Would metal go through my injectors if it was rubbing?

Oh yeah! :( There is a point on it that jabs into the rotating piece in the pump, like a set screw. If when the pump was installed the screw wasn't backed out, there's probably a lot of metal floating around in there. Not good!

The one in the picture HAS the plate still in place.
It's the little piece of tin under the head of that bolt.

Unless that's not a pic of YOUR engine, you should be fine.

Okay.
Simple check, pull the bolt and see if it's even the correct one and see if the tip is missing.

Took the bolt out and it had a divot wore into it from rubbing on the rotor shaft. I used a washer to shim it up and it still runs fine so I guess I lucked out.

Now to deal with my dropping fuel pressure that started yesterday.....
