Yup, you loosen it and pull that plate out. That lets you thread the nut in even farther than usual, though if you don't have the pump at #1 I'm not sure it'll even thread in...
1990 W250 4x4 Rattles, growls, whistles, and whines.
The plate is missing from mine and it is in the locked position. My engine rattles pretty bad under load...Would metal go through my injectors if it was rubbing?

Oh yeah! There is a point on it that jabs into the rotating piece in the pump, like a set screw. If when the pump was installed the screw wasn't backed out, there's probably a lot of metal floating around in there. Not good!

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
Took the bolt out and it had a divot wore into it from rubbing on the rotor shaft. I used a washer to shim it up and it still runs fine so I guess I lucked out.
Now to deal with my dropping fuel pressure that started yesterday.....
