blown headgasket

Postby odee » Wed Nov 28, 2012 7:42 pm

Guys, running a 5.9 in my chevy dually. The engine is a 89 model. I have to replace the headgasket pushing coolant to the puke tank. What is the best gasket to go back with? Replace the bolts or go with the studs? Best place or vendor here to pick up the parts.

Use a stock Cummins gasket. What are the mods and goals with the truck?

no real mods planned, I've got a different turbo from a 98 up with the exhaust brake, planning on doing the valve springs while head is off. I have the 94 and up ic on the truck also. I like the power the truck has right now. Truck is used as a tow rig for the drag car and jeep, some dd and road trips with the wife.

I would have head checked for cracks and flatness then just rum a tap down the holes to clean the threads and use stock bolts. There is a gauge that tells how much stretch is allowed in the stock studs.

Gauge, or not, I won't re-use them.

Stock gasket would be the best. Don't cheap out on it, or you'll get to go it again. Make sure to lube the threads and under the head of the bolts.

And, a BOTTOM tap would be best to use. Can clean out more of the hole. Not tapered at the bottom.

For the headgasket I will only use genuine Cummins. Ive heard mixed reviews on Victor Reinz.

Would be a good idea to take your old one in, if you go with a newer felpro. I personally have not seen the new ones, but the old ones, I wouldn't put on a lawnmower. Side by side, you'll know if they are giving you the new one or not.

The Victor Reinz, looks very similiar. But, it is not as good of quality.
