Weight

How much does the motor weigh? I'm thinking about buying an engine stand but don't want the thing to hit the floor when i let the weight on it. Also will the bolt holes in the back of the block hold it? (like the way you would a chevy 350 gaser)

I know my uncle has a big block he built and his stand is a 1k unit. It is very scary looking and he puts a 2x4 on the balencer to hold up the front. With it being much heavyer then that and longer in length I would go for a heavy one. I would think a 2000 lb one would be fine. I think the bare tare wieght of a 6B is around a thousand pounds.

My 89 FSM says 880 pounds less electrical components and less flywheel. It would be close to a 1000 with flywheel, starter, and alternator. Which book is correct? I don't know. Never weighed one. :D

I was looking at the 2000lb stand. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... umber=4420

But I just want to make sure the bolts or block aren't going to have an issue on the back of the block. Thanks for the input so far guys.

The engine stand we have at work holds the engine by the side of the block. Most heavy duty stands are like this.
The Cummins engine owners manual I have says 900lbs for a 4bt, 1100 for a 6bt. This is with the flywheel and other stuff bolted on.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I don't think that stand will even come close to holding it. If you could figure out how to get the engine attached, it would fold like a soggy hot dog bun. I have one similar to that with a 440 on it and it needed braced and gusseted to safely hold up the 440. The ratings they say on those are very optimistic.

Get two of those and make attachments for the side of the block. One will most likely fold up from the crank end.

I almost folded one with a BBC when I installed the heads.

I agree that picture of the 2,000 unit looks pretty scary. I would not put my legs by it. It may be rated at 2,000 pounds at the hub but not with a overhang.

Fellas, I needed a good way to not only hold a 6BT but also transport one - I started with the big Harbor Freight stand, moved the main post to the back crossleg, and added two legs up to the motor mount, and two diagonals to keep it from slipping out (which it did the first attempt).

have a look at the thread below, specifically reply # 1683, # 1789 (when it slipped out, oops) and # 1806, good to go.

most of the guys I have seen are mounting the motor sideways off of the motor mount
This lets an ordinary heavy duty stand carry the weight without flippig over
Only down side is the motor wont rotate all the way over if the front cover or bellhousing adaptor is on the engine
